We spend hours in our room everyday, especially now that we’re in quarantine and all! Having a room you love is important; it can become your safe space, your space to destress and relax. In this blog I’ll share 4 easy steps to making your room aesthetic, whether you want to completely re-do it, or simply make a few upgrades.
I have been obsessed with decorating my room since I was in elementary school. On my 9th birthday I received a bright orange rug, green fuzzy chair, and purple lamp from my family members! (Not to mention the countless One Direction pictures I pasted all over my walls!) Oh how my style has changed…
Over the years I traded the crayola colored flowers and polka dots for warm neutrals and rose gold. I love my current room and I feel it reflects my personality really well. If this were my acceptance speech for an aesthetic room award, I’d like to thank my Mom, who graduated with an interior design degree, and has helped me SO much by teaching me her “mad skills”! I also want to give a shout-out to Pinterest, because it’s always been there for me and my inspiration needs!
Without further adieu, here’s my tips as an unofficial expert in room design. Ready for a Spring renovation?
Pick a pallet and mood!
To create a cohesive space it is super important to stick to a color scheme and specific style for your room. Do you like a more modern and minimalistic style or bright and eclectic? Use pinterest or the internet for inspiration on the aesthetic you are going for or conjure one from the items you currently have in your room. You probably own furniture and decorations that are already your favorite color or style, because you were drawn to it when you bought it. It is much easier to replace or add to what you already have than to start from scratch, so make sure you check out this option before spending money on new items!
Try to stick to this one color palette/style and build your whole room around it. Then tie in the different colors in your pallet by spreading them throughout your room, and disperse pieces of furniture/accessories that are the same color farther away from each other. *Tip: Your bedding is one of the most important pieces, and it can “make or break” a room’s overall look. Make sure, if nothing else, your bed matches the style you want!*
- My style concept: Blush, Pink, Black, White, Rose Gold & Grey. Cozy, calm, warm, stylish but personal, “home-y”
- How I dispersed color throughout the room: I have rose gold lamps, a black and white bedspread, black night stand and bookshelf, calming grey wall color, white and grey accents, pink blankets and pillows, and wall art of all different colors in my pallet.
Decorate away
Now that you have a theme for your room, here are some of the things you probably have lying around your house, or can easily get on amazon or online shops to bring it to life through decoration!
- Lights! String them around your door, pictures, over your bed, everywhere!
- Lamps, to create softer lighting when you don’t want your bright ceiling one on.
- Throw pillows and blankets. Remember to coordinate the colors with your room!
- Banners! Buy these at a store or do the world’s easiest DIY project by cutting out some triangles in colored or patterned paper and putting them on string! I bought one with colored pumpkins and gourds on it from the dollar section at Target and strung it across my headboard for a super cute thanksgiving decoration!
- Candles
- Beads! String these as decoration just like the lights, or around your shelves, just like I did!
- Letter boards or light up boards (warning: you will spend way too much time browsing the internet for the perfect quote or seasonal pun to spell out on your letterboard!)
- A small plant or succulent
Make it personal
Your room should reflect more than just your style, displaying your interests and the things you love is a great way to make it feel more “you”. A lot of unsuspecting things can add a personal touch that will be the perfect the “cherry on top”!
- Display one of your favorite books or books of coordinating colors on a shelf
- A keyboard
- Jewelry or beauty products
- Art supplies- like some colored pencils or markers in a mason jar or mug
- A stuffed animal- don’t go crazy, but having one or two stuffed animals isn’t childish and can be cute in a chair or on a shelf
- Buy artwork personal to you (or make your own if you are talented!)
- This Etsy shop sells colorful floor plans of homes and buildings in your favorite TV shows! https://www.etsy.com/shop/DrawHouse?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=294134121They are super cute and come in a wide variety of shows including The Office, Friends, Gilmore Girls, Big Bang Theory and many more!
- Pictures! Pictures of your friends and family, your goals, your favorite celebs, things you love, fashion, travel, quotes etc. Try to match the colors or tones of the pics so they go together. Pinterest can help with this, as it will automatically suggest tons of images related to the topics and with similar colors to those you “pin”!
- Creative ways to arrange your pictures:
- Heart collage: Use patterned/colored paper or even an old paperback book you no longer need, layer the pages on the wall forming a heart shape, then collage your pictures on top. I put my collage in the corner, for a more interesting focal point.
- Photo circles
- Taped to your door
- Cute picture frames
- Clipped to a banner or string
- On a cork board
- Creative ways to arrange your pictures:
Keep it tidy
You could decorate your room with as many cute photos and lights you want, but a messy room isn’t aesthetic. (Unless you are Lara Jean from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before- but she had a production team!) Staying clean is necessary, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be difficult at all.
- Use storage bins or even a junk drawer if you need one, just make sure the clutter is out of sight!
- Clear your surfaces as much as possible, a few decorations go a long way! If you have too much great stuff to let go of, try rotating it out every month or so.
- Make your bed everyday!
- Do quick 10 minute clean ups! Turn on some music and You can make a pretty big difference in just a few minutes by putting away everything on the floor, hanging up some clothes, and picking away at that pile on your chair.
- Wipe down your surfaces periodically! Dust collects easily when something is sitting in the same place for months, don’t let it get disgusting!
I hope you enjoyed these ideas and found them useful in decorating your own room! I’m sure you have a lot of free time, so get started! See what changes you can make today, and when we’re finally done social distancing, invite some friends over and show off your fancy new bedroom!

Ashley this is so cool! I can tell you spent a lot of time working on your blog because of the aesthetic photos and content. I enjoyed reading your blog. It sounds like you’re in a good mood and we’re having a conversation, so great job :))
